What is your dream? For many people who dream of living in the United States, their dream is the "American Dream". But what exactly is this dream that they are looking for? In the following video, we will see a few first generation Americans (people who were born in the United States to immigrant parents) talk about what the American Dream means to them and their families.
Do you identify with any of these dreams? The wishes for the future mentioned here, such as doing what you want, owning property, and having economic power are not necessarily confined to the United States; they can be found in many places around the world.
The American Dream got it's name from author James Truslow Adams in his best-selling 1931 book "Epic of America.", where he described it as "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement."
Basically, the American Dream is the idea that those who work hard can make the life they want for themselves. The idea that hard work will be rewarded with a better life, whatever that means to you. No country is perfect and moving to a new country won't automatically give you success, but Americans do pride themselves on being "self-made" and rewarding those who work hard and don't give up. So even if you don't plan on emigrating and beginning a new life in a different country, you can still live the "American Dream" wherever you are by working hard for the things you want in life.
